[S4E9] The Prisoner: Part 1
The episode begins in Russia where our heroes (plus Yuri) are preparing for their hopeful return to America. Hop (David Harbour) and Joyce (Winona Ryder) share a long-awaited moment inside the safehouse. Joyce reminds him about that date at Enzo's they still have to get to, and Hopper says he's been dreaming about his double order of breadsticks, lasagna, and nice "Cheeanti." Joyce asks if he has been dreaming about anything else, and they (finally!) kiss. But it isn't long before they are interrupted by the phone call they've been waiting for from America. It's Dr. Owens' (Paul Reiser) right-hand agent Ellen (Paris Benjamin), who informs Hop that the Doc is "indisposed," and El (Millie Bobby Brown) and Joyce's kids "went off to fight some evil in Hawkins." Joyce comes up with a plan: the particles they saw in the prison are part of a hive mind. If they can sneak back into the prison and destroy the particles, maybe they can hurt the hive mind enough to give the kids an upper hand.
Hopper, Joyce, and Murray (Brett Gelman) set off for the prison while Antonov (Tom Wlaschiha) stays behind to ensure that come hell or high water, Yuri (Nikola Djuricko) gets Katinka off the ground. When they get to the prison, they discover that the demodogs and the shadow particles have broken out of the tanks and the guards have all been slaughtered. They learn from a just-barely-alive guard that the particles went into the demodogs, which are now wreaking havoc in the prison. Hopper comes up with a dangerous plan: lure the monsters to the pit, rain fire from above, and hope to hell it gives El and the kids an upper hand. Using himself as bait, he targets one demodog that he sees alone in the laundry room, snacking on a dead Soviet guard. Hopper whistles to get its attention and starts haul-assing it down the hallway, the demodog hot on his heels. And with that, the plan is off to a successful (and stressful) start.
Back in Hawkins, Steve, Robin, and Nancy are walking through the woods trying to avoid stepping on any slithery vines and awakening the hive mind. Robin, in a panic thinking they are lost, runs ahead, leaving Steve and Nancy alone, which of course means feelings are about to ensue. That dream Steve told her about his six little nuggets That was all true, Steve says, but he left the most important part out: Nancy is there. She's always been there. Nancy looks at him (again, barely disguised heart eyes), but before she can say anything, Robin comes running back and announces that they aren't lost -- the Creel house is just up ahead.
On a happier note, we get the reunion we've been waiting all season for between Hopper and El in their old cabin. They compare their shaved heads ("Bitchin'") and hug and cry, and for a brief moment, everything feels right in the world after the trauma that the Duffer brothers inflicted on us the past two hours. Outside, Joyce is reunited with El and her boys, and Mike and Hopper laugh and embrace. But the peace only lasts for a moment, of course. Cue sinister theme music! Will touches the back of his neck and looks up. The sky darkens as ash-like particles begin to fall. The gang walks through the woods to an open field where they see the grass has started to turn a grey-blue color, and the plants have started to wither and die. In the distance, the sky cracks with red lightning. The end has just begun.
FBI special agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and assistant director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) attend a United States Senate hearing, while Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) attempts to escape from a Russian gulag. "Terma" is the second part of a two-part episode, continuing the plot from the previous episode, "Tunguska".
Mulder is found by a group of Russian peasants (one of whom owns the truck that Mulder stole), who help him return to America, and rejoins his partner Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). Scully and assistant director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) had been detained by a United States Senate committee seeking to uncover Mulder's whereabouts when they cannot reveal his current location, but the committee was adjourned upon Mulder's arrival. The agents attempt to track down Peskow, following a trail of murders in Boca Raton, Florida, as well as locating a stolen truck. However, the assassin is able to outwit the agents, and destroys the last of the oil-containing rocks seen in the previous episode in an oil-well explosion after Mulder fails to remove the bomb. He returns to Russia, where it is revealed that he had been hired for this task by Krycek.[2]
Halstead actually stays pretty level here, telling his partner and girlfriend that it's not about her history but about the young girl who has died in the accident, and dealing with it when she's unloading that and her father angst on him.

In Kamchatka, Hopper tells the others the caller on the end of the phone was a friend of Sam Owens and told her he had Eleven and Joyce's children prepare to fight an evil force in Hawkins, but they all went off-grid. Murray suspects that it's the KGB again, but Joyce confirms the caller's claims, saying that the particles they saw in the prison were alive, meaning there's a Gate opening in Hawkins. Murray says that even if Yuri was able to fix Katinka, the earliest they'd get home would be late tomorrow. But Joyce says that since the threat is connected to the hive mind, they can instead psychically injure it by destroying the particles, thereby giving the kids an upper hand. Knowing that this means returning to the prison, Murray objects at first but the trio relents into going back. Hopper tells Dmitri to do whatever it takes to get Yuri to fix Katinka while he, Joyce, and Murray go back with the help of their weaponry, including a flamethrower.
At the Russian prison, the trio arrives in the courtyard with a plan to bait the Upside Down's creatures into the arena and set it on fire to help out El and the kids. Murray is given the flamethrower while Joyce is told to monitor the security system. Hopper plans to lead a Demodog out from the prison laundry room, but Joyce is haunted by Bob Newby's encounter with the Demodogs that resulted in his death. Hopper reassures her that he'll die someday, but not today, departing with a kiss.
Suddenly, Will begins to feel goosebumps on his neck as he looks to the sky to see looming clouds. The group takes notice as they look and El sees gray particles falling out of the sky. Meanwhile, all over Hawkins, the people take notice as well. Karen and Holly at the Wheeler house, Lucas and Erica at the hospital, and Steve, Robin, Vickie, Dustin, and Wayne at Hawkins High. Joyce, Hopper, El, Mike, Will, Nancy, and Jonathan walk their way to a field over Hawkins, seeing the clouds stemming from the cracks of the Upside Down, with red lightning striking out. El takes notice of the field slowly dying as the group realizes that the Upside Down is beginning its invasion of the world.

After leaving Dennis, Carrie gets a call from Saul's wife, Mira. Her character has become much more likable in later seasons because she's so incredibly human. In this call with Carrie, Mira reminds her that Saul is not just a part in this large puzzle that the CIA is trying to solve. That he is a man, with a family and a home and a life all his own outside the CIA walls. Mira knows Carrie's erratic behavior and ability to constantly look at the larger picture. It's a tender moment and you know that both of these women care about Saul very deeply. I'm glad Mira made the call, but I don't know if it was immediately necessary. As much as Carrie can be rather irrational with her snap judgments, I think that when it comes down to it she wouldn't let Saul die. Or, at least, I hope. 59ce067264
