After hours of trial and error, I was finally able to install OSX 10.11 "El Capitan" on my used iMac (mid 2009)!I tried to use the internet installer that came with it, but it would not work without signing into the original owner's AppleID (even though I specifically went into iTunes to "De-Authorize this computer" before wiping the original installation)

However, the sha1 hash did match any of the values at: -installer-checksums#mac-osx-installers-sha1-checksums6198647687 bytes, openssl sha1 InstallESD.dmg --> 732f873cbcf38d9e544e659d2429bd4444416cdaI am pretty sure the file is legit (since I downloaded it directly from Apple Support), so I edited the "mkosxinstallusb.sh" script and added it to the approved list--> see the line starting with "supported_checksums="...", and just added it to the end before the last closing quote)Also, make sure your USB thumb drive is completely empty before you start the script. In my case, I actually plugged it into the mac and formatted it with Disk Utility to "OS X Extended (Journaled)" (GUID Partition table) before I started. (I had tried it once before with a partially occupied USB drive, and it ran out of space before it could finish). I am not sure how much difference it made to format it withDisk Utility, but that is what worked for me!I then ran "sudo bash mkosxinstallusb.sh /dev/sdX "InstallESD.dmg", and the script took care of the rest. Finally, I could boot up the Mac while holding "option/alt" and my USB drive appeared as a bootable device! 17 minutes later I can startup OSX!

I may go ahead and re-download the installer and create a new bootable USB using "createinstallmedia", just in case there was a problem with the image I used, but at least now I can boot up the computer!

Note that official hardware support for macOS 10.12 "Sierra" is more limited than OS X 10.11 "El Capitan" that came before it. Be particularly certain to verify compatibility before upgrading an older Hackintosh to this version of the operating system, too.

Because hardware support for macOS Sierra (10.12) is more limited than OS X 10.11 "El Capitan," you may have hardware that is not compatible with later versions of the macOS but that is compatible with this version. Quality Hackintosh tutorials for El Capitan include:

Install OS X El Capitan on Supported PCs - How to install OS X 10.11 El Capitan on any supported PC from the legendary tonymacx86 using the site's own Unibeast 6 software tool. The site has troubleshooting guidelines if the installation does not go smoothly, also. It covers the OS X 10.11.1, 10.11.2, 10.11.3, 10.11.4, 10.11.5, and 10.11.6 updates, as well.

Note that although official hardware support for OS X 10.11 "El Capitan" is extensive, support for specific features, such as support for the advanced "Metal" graphics technology is more limited. If Metal capability (or another particular feature) is of critical interest to you, make sure that it is likely to work with your desired Hackintosh configuration prior to making hardware purchases.

Although official OS X 10.11 "El Capitan" hardware compatibility is the same, you may want to have your Hackintosh run OS X 10.10 "Yosemite" for compatibility with specific third-party hardware or software. Quality Hackintosh tutorials for Yosemite include:

Although official OS X 10.10 "Yosemite" and even OS X 10.11 "El Capitan" hardware compatibility essentially is the same, you still may prefer to have your vintage Hackintosh run OS X 10.9 "Mavericks" whether for software compatibility or simply because you do not like the "flat" interface design that OS X "Yosemite" introduced to the platform. Quality Hackintosh tutorials for Mavericks include:

Although hardware compatibility is essentially identical to OS X 10.11 "El Capitan," OS X 10.10 "Yosemite," and OS X 10.9 "Mavericks," Hackintosh installation procedures and tools can be different for OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion":

Install OS X 10.7 Lion via Download - The quintessential tutorial to install the download version of OS X 10.7 "Lion" on a PC with compatible hardware using xMove and Multibeast from tonymacx86. The same site also covers upgrading a Hackintosh to OS X Lion 10.7.1, 10.7.2, 10.7.3, 10.7.4,and 10.7.5.

Successfully installed 10.11.4 and 10.9.5 on 4/11/2016 using these instructions. Thank you for your detailed post. It saved me a lot of time and will enable me to save some power by virtualizing a couple of old imacs i was using for servers.

How do you expand the vHD? I grew the image in unRAID and when I go to Disk Utility in 10.11 I am told the capacity matches the new size, but have no option to increase the partition. If I use the command line sudo diskutil resizeVolume / R it processes for a bit and then gives the error message -5341: MediaKit reports partition (map) too small; if you recently grew your whole-disk, you should run whole-disk repair.

Every new operating system his limits, often related to which hardware you need to run it. OS X El Capitan has pretty simply system requirements: Any Mac capable of running Yosemite can run El Capitan. This means that 2007 iMacs, 2008 MacBook Airs, 2009 Mac minis, 2007 MacBook Pros, and 2008 Mac Pros can all run OS X 10.11.

About that warning tho...the MAS assumes you're trying to download and install, not just download. Without a computer properly configured to follow thru with an actual install as part of that process, you're stuck.

For unfortunate reasons too tedious and mundane to discuss here, I am stuck with Mac/OS 10.11.6. I am looking for a version of Firefox that will run under that version of Mac/OS. I did the basic research and was directed Firefox version 78. After that, I was directed to the Extended Support Release. When I downloaded and ran that, I was directed to the Apple App Store where no version of Firefox could be found. Where to next?
