How to Create and Customize Styles with the Roland GW-8 Workstation

The Roland GW-8 is a powerful workstation that offers a wide range of sounds and styles, with a special focus on Latin American genres. The GW-8 also allows you to create and customize your own styles, using the built-in Style Composer feature. In this article, we will show you how to use the Style Composer to make your own musical arrangements with the GW-8.

What is a Style

A style is a set of musical patterns that can be played back automatically by the GW-8, according to the chords you play on the keyboard. A style consists of several parts, such as drums, bass, guitar, piano, etc., that can be mixed and matched to create different variations. A style can also have intro, ending, fill-in, and break patterns that add more diversity to your performance.

How to Access the Style Composer

To access the Style Composer, press the STYLE COMPOSER button on the GW-8 panel. The display will show the Style Composer menu, where you can select one of the following options:

New: Create a new style from scratch.

Copy: Copy an existing style and edit it.

Edit: Edit an existing style without copying it.

Save: Save your edited style to a user memory or a USB memory.

For this tutorial, we will use the Copy option to modify an existing style. Press the ENTER button to select Copy, and then use the VALUE dial or the INC/DEC buttons to choose a style from the preset or user memory. For example, we will use Preset Style 001: Pop Rock 1.

How to Edit a Style

After selecting a style to copy, press the ENTER button again. The display will show the Edit menu, where you can edit various parameters of the style. Use the CURSOR buttons to move between different pages and items, and use the VALUE dial or the INC/DEC buttons to change the values. Here are some of the parameters you can edit:

Name: Change the name of your style.

Tempo: Change the tempo of your style.

Time Signature: Change the time signature of your style.

Key Shift: Change the key shift of your style.

Chord Recognition Mode: Change how the GW-8 recognizes the chords you play on the keyboard.

Part Select: Select which part of the style you want to edit (drums, bass, guitar, etc.).

Part Mute: Mute or unmute each part of the style.

Part Level: Adjust the volume level of each part of the style.

Part Pan: Adjust the stereo position of each part of the style.

Part Reverb Send: Adjust how much reverb effect is applied to each part of the style.

Part Chorus Send: Adjust how much chorus effect is applied to each part of the style.

Part Tone: Change the sound (tone) of each part of the style.

Part Edit: Edit each part of the style in detail, such as note data, velocity, duration, etc.

You can also use the buttons on the GW-8 panel to access some of these parameters quickly. For example, you can use the PART buttons to select a part, use

the VOLUME/VALUE knob to adjust its level or tone, use
