Harry Doyle (Burt Lancaster) and Archie Long (Kirk Douglas) are old gangsters who were sentenced together to 30 years in prison for a famous train robbery of The Gold Coast Flyer. They are the last train robbers and The Gold Coast Flyer is set to retire. They are released and ready to collect Social Security. Their parole officer Richie Evans (Dana Carvey) is an eager fan. Leon B. Little (Eli Wallach) is a Mr. Magoo assassin taking shots after waiting for 30 years to fulfill his contract. Harry insists on the straight and narrow. He even stops a bank robbery but is forced into a retirement home where he reconnects with Belle (Alexis Smith). The guys are forbidden to see each other for 3 years. Archie gets a job at a ice cream parlor and starts dating Skye (Darlanne Fluegel). Sgt Deke Yablonski (Charles Durning) arrested the guys in the first place but is now reduced to doing payroll. He is sure that the guys are up to no good and is willing to push them. It's great to have these old timers. They have good chemistry together. They are forced to be apart which doesn't help. The comedy around them is a little cheesy. The movie overplays the fish out of water theme. The movie world is done very broadly. Despite various little problems, these two veterans pull the movie through with their charisma.

"Big Trouble in Little China" is a perfect film is you want an action picture where you don't need to think too much. This is NOT meant as an insult...sometimes you really want a movie like this. The plot to the film is a bit like "Pee Wee's Big Adventure"...combined with a martial arts movie...an odd combination to say the least! When the story begins, Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) is driving with a Chinese-American friend in Chinatown. Suddenly, they find themselves in the middle of a Tong war...with hatchets, guns and mayhem. The 'good guys' appear to be winning when suddenly, several demigod-like characters arrive....with mystical powers and like the worst of the baddies in Shaw Brothers martial arts films. Jack and his friend manage to escape...but Jack loses his truck and the bulk of the film consists of the good guys infiltrating the baddies' hideout to extricate kidnapped women...and Jack's truck. If you are looking for realism, do not watch this picture. It's all very tongue-in-cheek and silly...and Russell plays a tough guy who really is in way over his head. Very enjoyable...not especially deep.
Nanciann Cherry in the August 13, 1986, edition of the Toledo Blade claimed the robots in the movie had little personality and faded into the background. She even went on to say that GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords was a superior film! Her review was filled with inaccuracies, however, citing characters such as "Unicon" and claiming that the destruction of Cybertron's moons by "Unicon" is what caused the Autobots to travel to Autobot City, at which point Megatron attacked. To be fair, she readily admits, "About 20 minutes into the film, I gave up on the plot and tried to count all the ideas that were stolen from other sources. Now that kept me busy." So she wasn't really paying attention, anyway.
Confusingly, in comparison to the Los Angeles Times article, modern box office tracking sites list The Transformers: The Movie as having made $5,849,647 in domestic (e.g., United States) theaters. Comparing this with the other online box office takes from animated films of 1986, the results are not particularly charitable; while it did better financially than GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords ($1,338,264) and Heathcliff: The Movie ($2,610,686), it performed worse than the 1986 My Little Pony movie ($5,958,456) and the second Care Bears movie ($8,540,346). Bringing up The Great Mouse Detective ($25,336,794) and An American Tail ($47,483,002) would really just be overkill. 076b4e4f54
