Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) enables the detection and quantification of neural activity associated with brain function and is a more sensitive and noninvasive measurement than event-related potentials (ERPs) [247]. The activation of a single muscle without measuring the intended movement can be assessed using fMRI. fMRI using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) allows for noninvasive near real-time assessment of the dynamic changes in the brain’s activity, which can provide insights into the functional state of the subjects. fMRI has been used to track the development of brain activation during a motor learning paradigm in individuals with motor delays [248]. fMRI provides a specific advantage for individuals with motor delays, because it can provide an accurate indication of motor function and neuromuscular activation before and during motor-task performance. Recently, a study using fMRI and ERP has examined potential inhibitory/excitatory asymmetries in transgenic mice during a delay of gratification task (in particular, in the ACC), and showed abnormal GABAergic/glutamatergic function in the ACC, albeit without associated changes in ERP [249]. This suggests that future animal models in which ERP can be utilized have the potential to elucidate the facial features of information processing deficits in DM1 that may be useful for monitoring treatment efficacy and potentially refining preclinical testing and models to enhance human translation
